BYU provides outreach shows for community groups and weekend shows for the general public.
The Friday night shows for the public are given by the BYU Astronomical Society during Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters. There are no Friday night shows during Summer Term. For more information about these shows see the calendar. There is often more detail the BYU Astronomical Society website. |

The BYU Eyring Science Center was built in 1948 to house the physics, geology and chemistry departments. The building doubled the size of the campus and served as an important landmark for nearly 50 years. The renovation began in 1995 and was designed to accommodate the physics, geology and the new food science and nutrition department.
Eyring, a nationally prominent physicist served as dean of BYU's College of Arts and Sciences for more than two decades, until his death in 1951.
In the 1940's, Eyring made a survey of the country's finest science research centers so he could advise BYU officials on how to build one of their own. In 1998, the building named for Eyring was rededicated after a two-year remodeling.
President Thomas S Monson, along with Eyring's daughter, Elaine Rieske, restarted the BYU Foucault pendulum in the foyer of the Science Center. The popular pendulum had been disconnected during remodeling.

The 47' brass Foucault pendulum highlights the lobby along with many fun scientific displays. Two domes adorn the roof and visitors can see the planetarium, the observatory, the acoustic chamber, the rock collections, and the underground lab.
A few new stops have been added to the tour as well: the Sensory Evaluation Laboratory, designed for scientific taste-testing; dozens of labs filled with high-tech equipment; and the Geology Department’s compact storage systems with space for more than 7,000 rock samples. |
